Esther Searle - BA (Hons) Studio Ceramics

Do as much research as possible before making a decision

I have a very supportive family, I enjoyed studying at school, my parents are divorced. I am the first generation in my family to study a Higher Education course. I went to secondary school in Winscombe in Somerset, and into Further Education there too.

I went to University when I was 20 and graduated in 2003. I went to University because I thought it was a good option if I wanted to go into a better job and it was good experience, socially and academically

The best thing about University was having the opportunity to be around talented people. The worst was debt, although I worked at the weekends and during the evenings. I chose my degree subject because after a national diploma in arts and design, I chose a course that would interest me. My first job upon graduating was as a Customer Service Advisor for TV licensing

My advice to others who are thinking about going to university is to do as much research as possible before making a decision. Look overseas too. My financial advice to others is to get a part time job.

My Current job is teaching at a school in China, supporting students oral English. This is based in Hefei _ Anhui Province, China. The best thing about this job is that I am interfacing with other cultures and travelling, and working with children. The worst is that I don't get to see my family much.

Advice for somebody wanting to get into my line of work? Be as flexible as possible, teaching can be very emotional. Research all aspects of courses.

As for my hopes for the future - I have applied for a PGCE in Art and Design at UWE. I would like to complete this then take my qualification overseas.
