Critic

The work of a critic consists of the appraisal and dissection of any piece of work within the arts. Critics are regarded with a mixture of terror, hatred and reverence. At the stroke of a pen, they can make or break an artistic creation, since many members of the public rely on their assessment before deciding whether to buy a book, or to see a film or a play.
Typical work activities include:
  • reviewing theatre productions, films, books and television programmes;
  • appreciating and analysing skills involved in production, writing or art;
  • networking with press officers and arts associations;
  • interviewing actors, directors, authors, press officers and agents;
  • working for newspapers, magazines and websites to provide critical analysis;
  • attending film, literature and arts festivals;
  • travelling widely, often internationally, to attend festivals and interview artists;
  • writing to tight deadlines.
There are no formal routes into this kind of work, and in most cases, it is likely that would-be critics would need to pursue a more mainstream journalistic career to start with.
