Plymouth College of Art and Design

We are one of only four remaining independent colleges of art and design in the UK with a history dating back 153 years. As a student at Plymouth College of Arts you will find your creative education supported by good technical and studio resources, and mentored by a staff that are passionate about teaching and provide unrivalled specialist expertise across the Fine Arts, the Applied Arts, Design and Media. Altogether we represent a strong, lively and dedicated creative community, engaged in specialist art and design courses from National Diploma and Foundation levels, through to a full spectrum of BA Honours Degree level programmes. Most importantly, we operate at a scale that supports true individual development and interdisciplinary dialogue with a clear focus on post-college professional practice.Plymouth College of Art and Design is situated close to the heart of the city centre, near the University, the Library and the City Museum and Art Gallery.

Educational Trips
To complement the practical and theoretical elements of our courses, you are encouraged to visit art galleries and exhibitions around the country, looking at the work of past and contemporary artists and designers. The visits can also include trips to trade shows and specific design workshops. An optional international trip is arranged each year for students and staff. Recent trips have included New York, Prague, Berlin, Barcelona and Paris.

Exhibitions
An important aspect of any art and design programme is the opportunity for students to present their finished products in either an exhibition or screening. The College is fortunate in having its own gallery, the Viewpoint Gallery, which hosts exhibitions of work by current and former students and visiting artists. At the end of each academic year the College holds its Summer Show, an exhibition of work produced by our graduating students. The show is open to the public and attracts thousands of visitors. A number of students also take part in our end of year live Fashion Shows and the prestigious New Designers exhibition in London.

Students’ Union (surfa)
The College has an active Students’ Union. The union acts on behalf of College students and can represent their views both within the College and on a national level through affiliation to the National Union of Students. The Union also organises a variety of social activities enabling students from different programmes to get to know each other including barbecues, trips and end of term parties.
