3D Design (Media Make Up)

Somerset College of Arts and Technology
ND - (BTEC) National Diploma

Description

This two year course is ideal if you want to pursue a career within the broad spectrum of 3D Design. We will introduce you to the traditional craft areas and also the areas of interior, product, furniture and metal smithing. The course is unique in the respect that it caters for both students interested in pure 3D Design and also a combination of 3D Design and media make-up which is a very specialist area of 3D Design (although currently there is no pure national award for media make-up).

You will be taught in well equipped workshops with specialist technical support. The teaching teams are all experienced and professional members of staff who teach across both further and higher education programmes.

You will be introduced to design principles and working methods including paper, card, wood, metal, plastics and clay. You will learn how to demonstrate your skills and understanding in both the deelopmental work and the production of finished work. Underpinning your designing and making will be our emphasis on teaching you how to be creative, inestigative, experimental and innovative in expressing yourself and your ideas.

You need a minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade A* to C, or a GNVQ Intermediate in Art and Design. You will be invited for an interview and will be selected on your own merit.

The course is studio and workshop based. Your progress is monitored by tutorials and seminars. Assessment is by practical and written assignments, continuous assessment and external moderation.

Students opting for the Media Make-Up pathway will learn to create and realise design ideas for make-up whilst recognising the factors that make up design and application. You will experiment with different special effects techniques and realise their effect on performers and models including fantastical hair designs. Underpinning this is the basic skills support and professional understanding you will need to help you through to become confident, competent and creative media make-up artists.

Throughout your course, your studies will be complimented and enriched through a visual culture programme looking at the history of art and design, understanding how and why design in all it's variety has evolved into what we see today.

Each year we have a number of educational visits that take place including London, the Eden Project, @Bristol, Paris and New York.

You will also be able to undertake some additional qualifications, such as a Certificate in Art and Design or an A/S or A2 qualification. Media Make-Up students are able to choose from a range of additional hair and beauty qualifications. All of these options are designed to give you the best opportunity to develop your skills, portfolio and enhance your qualification.
