3D (Product Design)

Somerset College of Arts and Technology
Foundation Degree

Description

This is a course with a unique flavour, providing you with skills to manage design processes, systems and people. You will examine how things work and how things are made through specialisation in Design for Industry or Design-Maker. You will explore the inter-relationship between technology, ergonomics and aesthetic requirements through various 3D specialisms: furniture, packaging, product, interior and exhibition.

You will have the opportunity to discover and improve your craft making skills through modules using various materials such as wood, metal, clay and stone, and their processes.  Throughout the course drawing will be used as a basis for your creative work.  The second year allows you to specialise within a chosen craft area enabling you to become a proficient practising maker.

You will be introduced to large and small-scale production, making, computer modelling, prototypes and finished articles in addition to expanding and experimenting with materials, production processes and developing technologies.
