A Level

What They Are:
  • A traditional qualification, A-Levels combine AS levels and A2s.
  • In Year 13, you can decide which of your AS levels to specialise in by taking the relevant A2 to turn them into A Levels.
  • A2s build on the knowledge you've learnt at AS level to give you a deeper understanding of a subject.
  • There are a huge variety of A2s on offer and they can be mixed and matched with Vocational A Levels, GNVQs and Key Skills to suit your interests.
How They Are Marked:
  • A2s are made up of three units that complement the three units taken for the AS level.
  • You'll be assessed using a combination of coursework (30%) and exams (70%), although practical tests may be used for some subjects.
Further Education/Career Opportunities:
  • A-Levels will help you get ahead in the workplace, or they can count towards the requirements for higher education.
  • Entry to university and colleges of higher education is usually worked out on a points system - all your qualifications add up to give you a score that helps determine your entry in to most higher education.
  • The points system changed in 2002 and now an A grade at A Level is worth 120 points - the same as an A grade in a six-unit Advanced GNVQ. It works on a sliding scale, so B = 100, C = 80, D = 60 and an E= 40 points.
What You Need To Do One:
An AS in the subject - as the A Level is made up of two parts; you can't do the A2 until you've done the AS.
It may seem confusing but A2s are not a qualification in themselves - you come out with an A Level not an A2 - A2 is just the name given to the second year of study that turns an AS into an A Level.
