Foundation Degree

What They Are
  • Foundation degree courses have been designed together with business and employers to provide students with higher level skills suited to the needs of those employers. Often they will combine the level of academic achievement in a normal degree with specific business, specialist and technical skills needed in the workplace.
  • They are more in tune with the labour market than traditional academic degree courses like History or English. For example, you can take foundation degrees in Film and Television Production or Aircraft Engineering.
  • They're a relatively new idea. Courses were set up in September 2001, and more than 70 subjects are on offer.
  • Entry requirements are determined by individual universities/institutions. But they can be available to people without traditional qualifications.
  • They can be full-time, part-time, delivered through local further education colleges, or distance learning.
More Information On These Courses
  • They are strong on retaining students
  • Adult learners are attracted to the part-time courses (90% of part-time students are aged 25 and over)
  • Nearly two-thirds of part-time students and just over two-fifths of full-time students entered their course via a non-academic route.
