NVQ - National Vocational Qualification

What They Are:
  • NVQs are work-related, competence-based qualifications designed to ensure you're totally clued up about your particular industry.
  • Developed by the industry for the industry, they're hands on qualifications you can apply directly to the world of work.
  • You can do them while learning on the job, but it's also possible to study them full time.
  • There are five levels; and levels 1-3 at can be taken at 16:
    • Level 1 Foundation skills in occupations.
    • Level 2 Operative or semi-skilled occupations.
    • Level 3 Technician, craft, skilled and supervisory occupations.
    • Level 4 Technical and junior management occupations.
    • Level 5 Chartered, professional and senior management occupations.
How They Are Marked:
  • As NVQs are work-based qualifications, you'll be assessed carrying out real work in the workplace.
  • If you're not in full or part-time employment, competence can still be demonstrated through voluntary work and temporary placements.
  • Made up of six units, two units are based on external exams and four on teacher assessed coursework or portfolio evidence.
  • The modules can either be done as a one-year course at college, or as you work.
Further Education/Career Opportunities:
  • One NVQ at intermediate level is equivalent to 4 GCSEs at grade C and above and if you're planning to go on to uni but you don't have enough GCSEs, your NVQ will count towards the basic university requirement of 5 GCSEs.
  • Whatever you want to do, the chances are there is an NVQ in it from IT to teaching.
What You Need To Do One:
  • NVQs are open to everyone at any age or stage of their career.
  • You can start at whatever level suits you.
  • There are no formal entry requirements - although the higher levels need more experience.
  • You can either get on to an NVQ through your employer or by contacting Learn Direct.
Any Other Info:
  • If you definitely want to work while doing an NVQ, then a Modern Apprenticeship could be right up your street.
