Activity 133:  Get Started With... Drawing

We are looking at how to draw from scratch outside and how to draw an object.

Drawing can feel intimidating, feeling pressure for it to look good - BUT the calm and nurturing feeling that you gain from drawing outweighs all this!

You Will Need:

  • A Normal HB pencil

  • A Notebook or White Paper

Step by step guide:

Calves & Cow in Pasture

Drawing from real life, like these cows, can be difficult as your ‘subject’ does not stand still. The upside of this is that it takes away a lot of pressure because you can sketch, and a sketch often looks unfinished.

Try to capture the shape of the cow first.

When drawing an object like a guitar or slipper, lightly draw out the initial lines you see.

Gradually highlight some parts by shading them in with the flat side of your pencil.

Then look at the light and darkness.

Then add your outlines by making them extra dark. This will allow the lightness to appear.

When adding the illusion of textures, simply work with different techniques like the little round circles.

And remember you don’t have to show your work to anyone - so just play about with the shades you are creating and enjoy yourself.

Have fun!
