Activity 15: Rainbow Fabrics: Knit, Felt, Sew

Inspired by our cheerful multicoloured theme, our first activity for this week looks at how to use different fabric based materials to create rainbow results.

We have three ideas for you to try, using some great resources from other creative organisations.

Have a try at knitting, felting and cross stitching to explore the colours of the rainbow.

ACTIVITY 1: KNITTING

YOU WILL NEED:

  • Wool: in different rainbow colours

  • Knitting Needles

For the pattern, why not try this tutorial by Knitting By Post who offer patterns for small, medium and large rainbows for free.

ACTIVITY 2: FELTING

You will need:

  • Felt in different colours

  • Water

You may remember trying felting with Vanessa previously. Can you remember the technique?

If you would like a reminder on how to do this, there are some great tutorials available on youtube: for example tutorial 1 and tutorial 2

ACTIVITY 3: CROSS STITCH

You will need:

  • A Needle

  • Thread (in the rainbow colours)

  • Aida (Cross Stitch Fabric)

This is a wee rainbow cross stitch pattern for you to try.

I would recommend using 2 strands of thread to make the colour more vibrant.

Cross stitch can be really relaxing - I try to do this most weeks as I find that I feel less anxious when sewing.

You can download a printable version here if easier for you.

If you make one of these, please send us a photo - we would love to see!
