Activity 18: Clothes Upcycling
If like me, you are getting a bit fed up with your current clothes, why not look at ways to alter or upcycle your clothes and give them a new lease of life!
YOU WILL NEED:
A clothing item to upcycle.
A Sewing Tape
WHAT TO DO:
Choose a garment you no longer want to wear.
Ask yourself why you don’t want to wear it anymore. This will give you an idea of what you can do with it – making you want to wear it again.
Gather all your materials: your clothing item, thread, scissors, pins, a sewing tape or ruler.
Place all your materials on a big flat surface (a floor will do just fine) and decide what you would like to change on your clothing. A little change can make a huge difference! We are not making a garment!
I decided to make a cardigan out of a jumper I no longer like.
I’ll now continue with my example but below you will find more ideas on what to do. To make a cardigan I cheated with this jumper as it already had a straight line in the middle, which I could cut. I cut that without measuring.
Now fold the sides of the cardigan, I double folded it as I wanted to put an emphasis on the folds.
Now add pins onto your fold to start sewing. You can sew by hand or machine.
It’s as simple as that! I wore my new cardigan the whole day with enjoyment, giving it a new leash of life!
The photos clearly show why I didn’t like the garment anymore: all the fluff making it look like it was years old. By adding the small changes, it is no longer as visible (although much more on the photos).
Add a button or two to your clothing item.
Cut a dress in half and sew the bottom half into a chunky scarf
If you make one of these, please send us a photo - we would love to see!
