Activity 64:   Birdfeeder Necklace

After Halloween you may find yourself with a surplus of monkey nuts. Birds love them and you don’t need a garden to give the lovely birds something to enjoy.

Mine will be hung up in the local park, you could combine the hanging up of the necklace with a nice walk in your local park.

You Will Need:

  • Monkey Nuts in shell

  • A good sturdy needle

  • A pair of scissors

  • A thread

  • Optional add on can be: - Popcorn

If you are adding popcorn - make sure not to add any salt or sweetness to it!

Step by step guide:

1. Thread your needle.

2. Thread your monkey nuts on: prick your needle into the middle of the monkey nut shell, then push it through by balancing the needle on the table. Otherwise it is far too hard on your hands!

3. Create a sequence that you like and finish off your necklace when it is about 20 cm long.

Remember the birds will hang on it and if you have a longer necklace the thread might break.

4. Hang the necklace up as a necklace or as a garland in a tree - high enough for the other animals not to reach it.

Although the wee squirrels might get there first!

If you make one of these, please send us a photo!
